Bath Players Help Wiltshire Avoid Wooden Spoon

May 27th 2015

John Grimshaw (Captain), Roger Hayes and Andrew Willis all represented Wiltshire at the annual Association Croquet Inter-County Croquet Championship which took place over the May Bank Holiday weekend at Compton and Southwick.

Wiltshire won four of their ten matches in Division Two which was enough to ensure a place in next year’s event, something which was by no means guaranteed as Wiltshire had won the wooden spoon in 2014.

Key to Wiltshire’s success, along with Grimshaw’s inspired captaincy, was the pairing of Richard Dickson and Beatrice McGlen who won 7 of their 9 matches. The Bath pairing of Hayes and Willis also fared well, winning 4 of their 5 matches together, very often due to some inspired play by Hayes in the final throes of the match. Neil Morrison and Jonathan Lacey made up the Wiltshire team.
